The Top Ten Most Beautiful OS X Apps
July 03rd, 2006 at 12:07pm • Posted in Apple • Tagged beautiful, top, list

Top ten lists are a dime a dozen, but I haven’t seen one floating around yet on the most beautiful OS X apps out there. And as someone who’s hitting MacUpdate daily as a small part of my job, always on the hunt for what’s cool and new, I thought I’d share some of my insight, condensed down for mass consumption into a neat little list. Before you go on, remember that this is going to be controversial no matter what. I haven’t found a single top ten list that doesn’t get most people complaining. But honestly, after a lot of thought, I feel there are very few truly beautiful OS X apps left out if you include the honorable mentions. Oh, and before you begin, note that Apple apps (like Front Row and Aperture) have been knocked off the list. This one features independently developed freeware and shareware apps. So, without further ado, presenting the ten most beautiful OS X apps in the world:

Jon Foster

about

Providence, what a wonderful name for a city. I’ve lived here for nearly two decades now and find it hard to imagine living anywhere else. Well, that’s not exactly true. I would love to move to New Zealand or perhaps live in Paris near to the Louvre. But for now, I’m quite happy being in this town, near to Rhode Island School of Design, where I earned my BFA.

I work in my home studio alongside my wife, our two dogs and cat. We all live together and do our respective jobs quite peaceably, the only issue being the abundance of cast-off fur that finds its way into paintings, food and my eyebrows. My wife is my muse and the pets are my comfort (although they trade these positions with ease) and I cannot easily imagine my life without them.

2 Seconds “Instant Tent”

2SECONDS QUECHUA
2SECONDS is a self-erecting tent. Just throw it in the air and it opens on its own before reaching the ground. All that’s required are six pegs to secure it to the ground. The key to the design are the two spring hoops made of fiberglass, a material that reduces the diameter of the hoops and allows it to be easily folded for compact storage. Compared to standard tents, 2SECONDS has fewer parts to lose and break while still providing an attractive, lightweight, waterproof shelter. Disassembly is easy as well: in 15 seconds the tent folds back into its self-contained package complete with carrying handles. Its affordable price and simple operation has brought camping to a wider range of customers. Sales in the first year have skyrocketed.

JeffCroft.com: Django for non-programmers

JeffCroft.com: Django for non-programmers
Django for non-programmers

In the 48 hours since I launched the new version of this site, I’ve been inundated with questions about Django, the Python-based web application framework I used to build it. I’ve pointed many people at the official Django website, which is loaded with great information. However, most of it is aimed at programmers — and rightfully so. Django is, after all, a platform for programming web applications.

I wanted to take a moment or two while I still have your attention to tell you why I think Django is a great tool for those of us who really aren’t programmers, as well.

I consider myself a web designer. I don’t dabble too deeply into programming. That having been said, I have downloaded, installed, and customized many-a-PHP-script in my day, and I’ve even written a few simple scripts of my own in languages like PHP, Perl, and Javascript. For the most part, I hate programming. It hurts my head (and the keyboard I bash it into, as well). But, I love what a good programmer can do. I want to build cool web applications — but they generally require someone working alongside me, doing all the dirty work while I “make it pretty.”

Steven Hargrove: How to redirect a web page, the smart way

Lets say you are updating your website completely, changing the names of page’s filenames (ex: file.html to file.php) and so on, this is great, you should stay updated! But what if you want to get rid of those old pages without having to worry about those who go to the old web page and see nothing? It doesnt end there either, other visitors do include major search engines such as MSN, Google and Yahoo! If people are finding your old pages when querying in these search engines, and they attempt to go to that page that has been deleted or moved, they will get a “404 File Not Found” Error! Now i know you dont want that, no webmaster wants that!
